More bars in more places
Jul. 18th, 2024 11:14 pmWhen I go to New Orleans I am going to want to check out some cocktail bars, but top cocktail bars is a reason why people travel here. A local bar has just been short listed for some important international award, and stuff like that happens a lot here. Bars here short list or even even big awards, even international ones. So, I want to go to a few before I go, might effect how I enjoy or even approach the Nola bars.
Also, I need to work on my 'picture of drink with bar in background' game:

I actually went to Hey Love, one of our big deal cocktail bars, about a week ago. Their food menu lists all allergens! It's a big deal cocktail bar with multiple things I can eat. Also, it's in Jupiter Next and the OG Jupiter has one of my favorite bars in Portland, the Doug Fir. I just haven't been in a while because some bars are more awkward to go to solo than others, and I just wont solo Doug Fir. I figured Hey Love would be on the other end of the spectrum and I was right. From the way the layout and vibe was, being there alone was totally chill.
So, how were the amazing cocktails? I went just before close on a Wednesday night figuring it would be a bit slow. It was not, it was packed and lively. Also, the bar is wide enough that you need to shout orders. So, I could not ask the questions I wanted to about the drinks. I could order a peach mojito with no questions, so I only ordered that. I could have had about a dozen of those mojitos, and I mean that in a good and bad way. They were delicious, crisp, amazing, and also small. The glass was narrow and had a lot of crushed ice. It felt like the right amount of ice for the drink, part of the drink experience, not like cheaping out. But, like a drink 4x the size would had felt like a good, satisfying drink. I had two in under 40 minutes. Me. You see my normal bar posts with half pours of beers I take 2-3 hours to get through? I am a lightweight. I quickly downed 2 of those no problem.
I think the way to really experience the bar would be to go midweek right when it opens so I could talk to a bartender. Also, one of the bar's features is the living ceiling of interwoven plants. At night with the lighting situation hard to even tell. In daytime I could have gotten a cool shot of that and also tried different drinks. But, I am not planning on going back. I'm going to make a list of other bars and work through those. If people travel here to drink our cocktails, I should try some myself.
