* Baldur's Gate fandom continues to be a place where yes, there is drama and shitty people but it's nothing, nothing like what people make it out to be. I am seeing lots of hand wringing over what poor Neil Newbon puts up with in his streams full of unhinged fangirls. (Love how some spaces specify girls when Neil is extremely careful to avoid gendered language like that and is very clear that a chunk of his fanbase is male and has people of all genders)
Anyway, yeah, his stream has mods. It's not overrun by anything. Like a responsibly content creator of his size he has multiple mods. Most of the problem people are yeeted before he can even see the messages. The reason why a lot of the VAs do most of their interactions on twitch is because it's a controlled environment that closes when they aren't in it. And fans like it because the gross people get the yeetus deeleetus.
Also, people are obsessed with Astarion fans clearly being the worst and him getting the most rancid discourse, etc, because that fits what people expect from fandom drama. And no, actually, that is not the main drama. Not even close. People are just so primed to hate on certain types of fans. And again, in some spaces it's certain types of fangirls even though Neil is careful to never use that word.
People are still dumpster diving into Steam forums, and worse, just to find unhinged shit to point at and pearl clutch over.
As primarily an Astarion/Halsin fan, trust me so much more static is aimed at Halsin and Halsin fans.
Also people talk like Dave Jones is getting like traumatizing amounts of drama when he's said in interviews that he's had no problems so far.
People just want to have a certain diet of fandom wank and if it doesn't happen organically, they'll just make it the fuck up

I'm really glad that the VAs aren't getting swarmed by people behaving badly, but it seems like they've been quite sensible about it!
And ah, yes. The assumptions about it being icky gross fanGIRLS ruining the space or harassing the VAs or starting drama... even when it's not happening anyway, and even if it was happening, the space is not the mono-gender icky girl cootie party that people weirdly act like it must be.

And some of those mods do clearly suck... but they are not the base game, and getting mad at the game or the fandom as a whole over that sort of thing is just... so entirely not helpful or necessary.
And of course, the imported wank from fandoms past!
